The U.S. Navy is asking government investigators to suppress information concerning the toxic water scandal at the Marine Corps' Camp Lejeune, according to a letter obtained Thursday by The Huffington Post.
The letter, signed by Maj. Gen. J.A. Kessler of the Marine Corps and dated Jan. 5, 2012, asks the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry to withhold from a forthcoming report details about the whereabouts of water lines, wells, treatment plants and storage tanks on the North Carolina military base -- in the name of national security.

-As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I fought to expose the facts about the Camp Lejeune water contamination and to expedite notification to all potential victims. My legislation requiring the Pentagon to provide such direct notification through a registry was signed into law. The Corps, however, has not utilized the registry to directly inform military families about the EPA's determination.
The provision of medical care for the people made ill by the contaminants in the installation's drinking water must now be addressed through the legislative process. The cost of that care may eventually be high in terms of dollars. We must, nevertheless, meet our nation's ethical and moral responsibilities.
Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Rep. Brad Miller, D-N.C., are to be commended for their sponsorship of legislation that would provide medical care through the Department of Veterans Affairs for individuals who suffer from one or more of these cancers or other health effects and who are known to have served or lived at Camp Lejeune during the years in question. Passage of their legislation and its enactment into law are the necessary next steps.
While passage of Burr's bill looks promising, there is opposition in the House of Representatives to Miller's bill on fiscal grounds. To argue that the United States should not provide medical care to its veterans and their families, whether those injuries were sustained in combat, during training or due to exposure to dangerous chemicals on post, is unconscionable and indefensible.

About 300,000 people who lived and worked in North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune are being asked to fill out a detailed survey to determine what diseases may be linked to the base’s contaminated water supply. As many as 1 million people may have been exposed to toxins in well water that sometimes registered 40 times higher than safety standards, The Washington Post reported.

The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry also is surveying more than 50,000 people who lived and worked at Camp Pendleton in California before 1986 for comparison purposes. Officials hope the surveys will provide answers to long-standing questions about the health effects of exposure to such chemicals as benzene, a known carcinogen, and tricholorethylene and tetracholorethylene, possible carcinogens, the Post reported.

Last year S-1518 was killed in committee. Now a year later, Senator Burr has kept his promise. Once again the Caring for Camp Lejeune Veterans Act is poised for another vote in the SVAC. CAMP LEJEUNE – The U.S. Senate is looking into a suspected link between tainted water and men with breast cancer at Camp Lejeune.

The Senate's environmental and public works committee is holding a hearing on a bill to improve testing and reporting on suspected cancer clusters, birth defects and other health concerns. The National Resource Defense Council and famous environmental activist Erin Brockovich testified before the Senate.
Investigators want to know if exposure to the poisoned water caused illnesses. As many as 1 million people were exposed to the contaminated water from the mid-1950s until the wells were closed in the mid 1980s.
Nearly 160,000 people have registered with the Marine Corps to get information about the contamination.
Some North Carolina representatives are pushing for legislation that requires the Navy and Marine Corps to help complete studies to determine a link.
